Every scenario is bound to be unique but the common factor here is that getting married often means a big change in the lifestyle of both the girl and the boy. Girls most definitely leave the maternal home when they get married. But boys too have left their homes to pursue their careers in different cities. So it is a new beginning for the both the boy and the girl. And the change of any kind and in any form can make us all jittery.
I need to realize that I too have my share of flaws. I need to overcome my ego and work on my weaknesses when my better half brings it to my notice.
Myriad such thoughts, fears, and insecurities arise in the hearts and the minds of the bride and the bridegroom. Chatting over the phone or via apps or even in person can bridge the gap and cement the bond of love. But the nerves are tingling with eager anticipation and always seem to be working overtime with frenzy.
Our ancestors were so pragmatic, so prudent, and so sagacious………to create a beautiful ritual where henna leaves are dried, powdered and turned into a paste using eucalyptus oil or clove oil and some lime juice.
Henna is a cooling agent. The nerve endings of our nervous system lie on the fingers and toes. So when this paste is applied in beautiful intricate patterns on our hands and our feet before the wedding ceremony, it cools down our frayed nerves and body.
The bride and the groom often have to fast for some premarital ritual or the other. They are tense. The entire house is teeming with guests. Their body is out of sync and they are prone to headaches and fevers. The weather may be changing outside making them susceptible to viral diseases. And mehendi is that simple beautiful art form that takes care of all these problems even before they arise. Prevention is indeed better than cure in such once in a lifetime occasions.
The thin green line falls quickly quietly and correctly in place on the hands and the fingers. The designs are intricate and the bride can feel the cooling effect immediately. The dark green color complements the fair skin of the hands and the feet.
After a few days, the Mehendi takes on a brick red coppery shade. The bridal jewelry, the beautiful Banarasi saree, the silver anklets, the golden bracelets and the bangles, the tikka and the golden sun and moon antique pieces are gently pinned onto her thick soft silken hair.
The Peethi ceremony was performed one day before the wedding and the bride looks radiant and shy. Her external beauty is evident but it is the inner beauty that will captivate the heart of her soon to be husband.
My nerves are throbbing, pulsating and brimming with love and anticipation for you dear husband……
The brick red color of my Mehendi speaks for me today.
I was nurtured and loved and respected in my home by my parents. I yearn to be nurtured, loved and respected in my new home too. My mehndi is asking you to take good and proper care of me always……today my parents are incapable of expressing their sentiments to you dear husband……. so my Mehendi is making this quiet statement on their behalf to you today.
You will hold my hand in yours for the first time today. And my hand will always remain in your hands for the rest of my lifetime. Today my beautiful Mehendi is speaking for me, is throbbing for me and pulsating with my love for you. But tomorrow my hands may not be as beautifully decorated as they are today. My mehendi may fade with time. But my love for you will never fade. My love for you may take a different form and a different facet.
It is up to you my dear husband to decipher and nurture the love that brims within me. Yes, on my part, I too will ensure that love always kindles our relationship.
The Mehendi on my hand has taught me a lovely lesson………that the heat and the passion within our hearts need to be reined in and cooled down to maintain our balance. Maybe I will be the heart and the soul of our family.
Your hands are coarse, firm and bigger than mine. They look like strong capable hands. Tradition says that just a smidgeon of mehendi is enough for the bridegroom. I hope that means you will be the equipoised stable steady mind of our family.
The heart cannot work without the mind. The mind is of no use without emotions.
As we hold our hands together for the first time today – let the Mehendi on our hands cement our bond of love. Maybe sometimes I will choose to be the mind of the family and you will opt to be the heart and the soul of the relationship.
It does not matter who does what as long as there is love in our relationship. The Mehendi is speaking to us in its own silent language of love to both of us today…..insistent.
I will not be there with both of you may be after a fortnight. I will fade away into insignificance with time. But I know I have cemented this bond of love with a lot of care and love. My patterns are very intricate. But they are beautiful to look at. Life may be a series of intricate twists and turns. It does not matter who plays the role of the heart or the mind in your bond of love – as long as the soul of the relationship is nurtured all will be well……….I promise you this and this promise of mine will hold good for eternity……..yes…… even if I fade away with time.
