If there is something that has always attracted the people is the story of the Royal Dynasties. We are fascinated maybe because these people seem so far from us, from the very normal people, or maybe because each one of us, at least once, had dreamt to be a princess or a king or a part of the royal family. But what is a dynasty? Which are the most important royal dynasties in the world and why they are more important than the others?
A dynasty, or sometimes a “House” is a sequence of rulers from the same family, usually in a monarchical system and, almost always has a patrilineal descent; but the House of Windsor is an exception because the descent passes across the matrilineal blood, to the sons of Queen Elisabeth. Up to now, the longest living one is the Imperial House of Japan, the Yamato dynasty, born in the 660 B. C.
The most important and famous Royal Dynasties in the world are the following:
The Romanovs family is the second most important royal family in Russia. It was founded in 1613 and it was alive until the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II on 1917 after the February Revolution. This family is also very famous because of their execution, together with all those who were in prison with them on 1918.
The Grimaldi royal family is connected with the history of the Republic of Genoa, Italy and Monaco. It is an Italian family founded at the end of XIII century by Francisco Grimaldi. It is alive until today and, in this moment, the head of the Grimaldi family is Albert II, Prince of Monaco.
The Windsor family comes from the House of Saxe-Cobug and Gotha and it followed a German paternal descent. The name Windsor born in 1917 and was changed because of the feeling, not so good that English people had for German country. Its founder was George V and, in this moment, the head of the family is Elizabeth II. As for the Grimaldi family, even the Windsor one is well known for a lot of rumours (the death of Stefano Casiraghi and the one of Lady Diana for example). In both the houses, the most chatted and famous figures were female: Grace Kelly for the Grimaldi House and Lady Diana for the Windsor and, both of them didn’t come from the royal dynasty.
The Plantagenets were born in France and this name joins distinct royal houses: the Angevins and the one of Lancaster and York. They reigned since 1154 with Henry II, until 1485 when Richard III died.
The Orange Nassau family is, nowadays, the royal family in Netherlands. It has German origin and it was founded in 1544 by William the Silent; today, even if the original descent is ended, the head is Willem Alexander.
The Bourbon royal family has French origins and it is a branch of the Capetian dynasty. It was founded in 1272 by the six son of King Lois IX; Robert, Count of Clermont. They make part of this family even the Bourbon of Spain, the House of Condè and the one of Orleans.
The Savoy family was founded in 1003 by Umberto I in the Savoy region but, in very few time, it grew in power and arrived in Italy until 12th June 1946 when Umberto II had to leave Italy after the results of the constitutional referendum. Today, there is a little bit of confusion about who is (or who has to be) the head of this family: Vittorio Emanuele, Prince of Naples or Prince Amedeo, Duke of Aosta.
The Bernadotte family is the current royal family of Sweden; it was founded in 1818 by Charles XIV.
