Yes, people protest, and that is what happened when Donald Trump took the office this year. Over 5,000,000 women, clad in pink, protested all over the country. The objective of the rally was to show that women’s rights are human rights. The sheer enormity of the rally set the bar for feminist movements all around the world.
When the Harvey Weinstein story broke out in October, the whole world was shocked, women all over the world to come share their stories. The hashtag #MeToo went viral and started appearing on every feed on every social media platform. Women showed solidarity and exposed the harassment they faced and were forced to keep shut about.
Muslim women, all over India, fought against the patriarchal institution of ‘triple talaq’, an act that allows a husband to divorce his wife by simply uttering the word ‘talaq’ (divorce) thrice, and finally, the victory was theirs. In August this year, the Supreme Court passed the verdict, illegalizing ‘triple talaq’, thereby showing that in the eyes of the law a woman deserves the same rights as a man.
The highly anticipated reboot from DCU released this year, and boy was full of wonders! Wonder Woman smashed Box Office records and showed the world that women can don the cape of justice as well as their male counterparts. Not only was the lead character, Gal Gadot, a female, the movie was also directed by the superwoman- Patty Jenkins. Also, the fact that Gadot shot the movie while she was pregnant, makes her a Wonder Woman in our books.
While it is difficult to understand why the country banned women from driving in the first place, it gives us immense joy that the ban is being lifted. Though women will have to wait until July 2018, to actually get behind the wheels, we can’t wait for it!
When it comes to making statements- whether through her music or activism- Taylor Swift comes through. Radio host, David Mueller sued the country singer after he lost his job upon Taylor’s declaration of him harassing her at a meet-and-greet. The ‘Shake It Off’ singer counter-sued him for $1 to make a point about harassment and consent. The cherry on the cake, she won!
Viola Davis of ‘How to Get Away with Murder’ fame, became the first African-American woman or man to win the triple crown of acting. She has won awards at the Oscars, Emmy and Tonys.
Working women in India will now get a paid maternity leave for up to 26 weeks. This new law is applicable to the first two children while the leave period remains 12 weeks for the third child.
Time Magazine awarded its ‘Person of the Year’ award to the ‘Silence Breakers’. These are the women who spoke out against sexual assault and harassment.
