Today it is common knowledge that tobacco does cause cancer but there used to be a time when people did not know the same. In fact, instead of being thought of as hazardous, there were times when people thought that cigarettes are actually good for you and the smoke for people around you. It was in the 1950s that the problem finally began being understood with agreements being signed in 1988 where the Tobacco Companies accepted defeat.
The Vietnam War on August 2, 1964, has been said to kill thousands of Vietnamese people as well as American soldiers. Only, these victims do not exist at all. The USS Maddox and the USS Turner Joy were actually two destroyer Navy ships performing patrol in South Vietnam and in the confrontation that did occur between the Maddox (later joined by Turner Joy) and the Vietnamese resulted in the death of 4 North Vietnamese soldiers. President Johnson's claim that the Vietnamese attacked first is, however, true. The rest of it may be an international misdirection. (At least we're one war less and some lives have been spared then!)
If the advance of AIs in today's world frightens you, and even if it doesn't, think about how horrendous mind control would be and be glad it does not exist. As it so happens, the CIA along with US Army Chemical Corps had attempted experiments on it. Freaky!
Project MKUltra took place in the 1950s and was stopped when it crossed legal and moral boundaries which they did on their unknowing subjects. It may have become the cause of illegal drug crisis in the first place.
Hitler's death itself contains a few conspiracies. While some believe that he did take his own life, there are others who believe that it was his last con to escape by fooling the world. To lessen these conspiracy theorists' ideas, tests were performed on a skull in possession of the Russian government to prove it had been Hitler's. However, it turned out to be a woman's instead. It's ironical how instead of putting an end to the theories, it gave new hope to them.
It is commonly believed that the actor John Wilkes Booth was the sole conspirator who single-handedly assassinated Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Theatre. However, it turns out that he had 9 more co-conspirators, including Mary Surratt who was the first woman to be executed by the U.S. government. David Herold helped Booth escape after leaving the Ford's Theatre, George Azterodt did not attempt the act but was executed for plotting against the president, Lewis Powell attempted to assassinate the Secretary of State William Steward as well. There have been many books and movies on this single issue if you would want to learn more about it.
We've heard about secretive cults of the elite people for ages but never known them to be true or not. Turns out, they are! It is said that the rich meet to socialise, listen to music and drink generally. The Post believes that they also perform rituals in front of a wooden owl, while The Washington Post believes that the members 'share a passion for outdoors, music and theatre'. Before joining the White House, it is said that Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon were a part of these societies as well (Bohemian Grove being a famous one). Apparently, the idea of an atomic bomb generated in one of these meetings as well.
Though Dalai Lama has denied it, the CIA is believed to have funded him mostly to form an ally with the Tibetan Resistance fighters against Communist China in the 1960s. A six lakh figure salary was supposed to have been given to him. In declassified State Department Memos, the organisation says, "The purpose of the program ... is to keep the political concept of an autonomous Tibet within Tibet and among foreign nations, principally India, and to build a capability for resistance against possible political developments inside Communist China."
