Our Indian Constitution gives us the six fundamental rights as citizens of India, all of which is stated in the Constitution itself through articles 14-35.
“All citizens shall have the right
(a) to freedom of speech and expression;
(b) to assemble peaceably and without arms;
(c) to form associations or unions;
(d) to move freely throughout the territory of India;
(e) to reside and settle in any part of the territory of India; and
(f) to practise any profession, or to carry on any occupation, trade or business.”
However, on the exception of when the interest of public order, morality, health or other conditions are to be considered, at other times everybody has the right to profess, practice and propagate his religion freely.
To allow each community to run its own institution and preserve its culture and language, Articles 29 and 30 state that the minorities have a right to protect their interests and establish and administer educational institutions.
(Article 31 has been omitted by the 44th Amendment Act)
Whenever a citizen’s fundamental rights have been intruded upon, they can appeal to the Supreme Court to safeguard the rights of the citizen.
Every citizen of the world must be aware of the fundamental rights that they enjoy in their own country. Knowledge is power, and to be in the dark for ignorance is your own loss if you are ever deprived of your rights as a human being.
