Fast forward to now we can travel from country to country, safe & sound without giving a second thought to how easy it is. (Excluding India to the USA obviously :) )
A major part of the safety we feel today is due to the Police.
The role of Police in society mainly boils down to 3 points:
The successful execution of the above 3 points provides the base for a modern functional society, which is why being a part of the police force is one of the most respected jobs in the world
Police come from the Latin word ‘politia’ meaning ‘public order.’ But the job of a policeman doesn’t just end at maintaining law & order. In fact, it begins from there. Because you see, the police are not the army.
We approach the police for help. The police are our saviour if any danger befalls us. The police is our saviour if we are faced with injustice. It is their job to respond immediately to emergencies, terrorist threats and robberies. They even have to educate the society of safety measures. The police are our backbone: invisible yet most important.
It is our right to invoke the Police force to serve and protect us. But it seems the image of the police is deterring many people from approaching the police and invoking their rights. The image propagated through movies and media has projected the image of a monster to our sincere Police. Yet there is no program undertaken by the government to change this image. This must be done for a more functional society.
Keeping the city safe by patrolling areas, investigating crimes, maintaining safety is not an easy job considering this has to be done 24/7. The responsibility and power to limit are in the hands of police.
The power to limit: That’s the only weapon the police has. But just like a knife which can be used for dinner or murder; there exists scope for misuse of power. The power to eliminate the wrong in our society: but who decides good or bad? Because sometimes a group of sentences called laws are not equal to justice.
The biggest disability of the modern world is the belief in government because at the end of the day the government is just a group of human beings sitting in a building. Human beings who, by nature, are inherently selfish.
The public protests for more freedom, more transparency, and more justice; but then the very police which is supposed to protect them uses their power against the common people. But it’s not them at fault they are just parts of a machine doing what they are told.
They are just a wing of the executive department of the government. The lack of communication between police, public and government just aggravate the problem. From their headquarters to their salaries; the justice-keepers themselves are subject to injustice. But no one is evil in all of this. It’s all just miscommunication.
Mutual trust is the key: It is our right to be protected by the police. They exist to protect us but they are our friends too. An awareness of this image of the police has to be spread in the media. A balance of power has to be maintained. An agreement between us, the public, that we will abide by the laws and that the police will continue to dutifully serve and protect us is enough to lead us to peaceful effective society, which is the purpose of everything anyway.
