Yet, when people go on to highlight the drawbacks of what Dr BR Ambedkar had done that affects them today, they forget on his contribution as a social reformer for the social upliftment of the backward classes. The social recognition of Dalits and the fight for the eradication of caste discrimination was his life’s aim. He is himself not only the first ‘untouchable’ to attain higher education but also to enter university. His success in his career can be seen as he became a jurist and went on to become the first Law Minister of independent India.
His passion for eradicating the practice of caste discrimination led him to found the ‘Bahishkrit Hitakarini Sabha’. The main aim of the organization was to provide education and socio-economic improvement to the backward class. It was his own struggles that led him to give his life to help others like him who have been victims of discrimination in every walk of life.
He was also the chairman of the drafting committee of the Constitution of India. He opposed Gandhi to enforce his want for separate electorates that he demanded but later reached an agreement in the Poona Pact where the reservation was granted to the depressed class in the legislative assemblies.
The constitution drafted by him aimed to bring about a social revolution in the country freeing it from any sort of discrimination. It provided the citizens with freedom of religion, abolished untouchability, advocated rights for women and bridged the gap amongst the classes of the society. It even provided reservations for jobs and education for members of the backward class.
The man is responsible for destroying the excess discrimination between castes, rebuking the Hindu orthodox treatment for the same. He wrote books to showcase his points. It is only today that there must be a change in the privileges that SC and STs enjoy since we should remember that Ambedkar worked for uplifting their class but not thinking of a misuse of the situation decades later. In Ambedkar’s time, had it not been for him, all Indians would not have been brothers and sisters and we would have to live in a society where equal opportunity is not provided to all.
