The existence of student unions and student politicians help bring unity amongst the students. These unions voice the rights of students to the administration and are a link between the two. Many times, the administration may impose some kind of rule or restriction on the students, then it is very necessary for the union to protest it and demand their rights to be fulfilled.
It must be remembered that protests do not explicitly mean violence. The grievances can be directly addressed to the administration, and then if they are not met can resort to peaceful protests.
The inherent fear of violence is probably what gives the whole concept of student politicians such a negative image. We do hear many colleges and students shamed because they are involved politically. At a college level, being involved in politics is to fight for the rights and represent the fellow students – it is a healthy thing to do, and well any group always does require a leader!
These leaders are even chosen by the students, and unlike a student, the cabinet is not appointed by teachers. So, there is also proper representation through voting and the favouritism of professors can also be avoided this way.
Another important aspect is that student politics in colleges give a platform to those who wish to be politicians in the future. Leadership skills immensely increase and so do the communication skills. The ability of these politicians to think about the needs of the mass is another skill that they develop.
Campaigning during voting is not only a healthy exercise but a fruitful one. Successful campaigning not only bears the results through an election, but the people involved to help and the whole process itself is innovative.
Think about when there is some product to be sold, without its proper marketing strategy how can it be made popular for consumption. In a similar, but non-objective fashion, campaigning allows the other students to know what the objectives of those whom they would vote for are, how much these student politicians are dedicated to working keeping the interests of the other students in mind and who listens more to the needs of the mass. Even if you are not the winning party, there is always a lot to take back from this experience.
