While it is undoubtedly true that it was necessarily up to a point for fair representation of the scheduled castes, tribes and other backward classes, today it has turned out to be more of a free pass with lower cutoffs and greater advantages.
There are now people who come from families who have made their name in society, been able to provide for themselves a fair living and education, so why does the newer generation need this certificate anymore? Are not the true ones in need for advantages only the economically backward section of society in need of education?
It is argued by some that since there are a lot of benefits, including tax cuts, in government jobs, the same could be extended to the private sector. Then, on the other hand, private sector heads are of the opinion that by introducing reservation and letting people who are less deserving take the seats of those who are more competent, it would only help to reduce the productivity of the company.
The policy for reservation is seen as a birth-right in many communities. It is known that any political party that shall remove this system would altogether receive major unpopularity from the ones who enjoy these privileges. So, political parties use this as an agenda to keep their votes intact.
There has been much talk about the need to introduce reservation of seats in the private sector from political leaders themselves, like the Chief Minister of Bihar, for which the issue comes up time and again. But it is NOT happening!
